EEEE! BIKE!!
Ok I *was* going to post a post about my bike, but I hadn't realised I hadn't finished my previous post about me dying. So this post is about me living my life to the max... again...

So recently I've been resiting buying a Mac Mini and a HDTV. Resisting quite well in fact, even through proximity of Apple stores etc etc, but this weekend was a slight dent in the "lets save LOTS" plan of life.

I might have bought http://www.boardmanbikes.com/road/road_team.html

For those of you wary about clicking links, heres a picture.

Its my bike

Yes its in my kitchen, yes it says CB or Chris Boardman, or Boardman 17 times over the entire bike, and yes, it moves like lightning. It also weighs less then my packed briefcase and I love it. NEEOOOWWNWN

That's the thing, they're probably the cheapest racers you can buy, but they've got insane stuff on them. Took it for a 10 mile ride today (bearing in mind I havn't been riding for a *long* time) and apart from getting used to the gear shifting, and the new way of holding the handlebars (long story) the only problem was when I pulled up on the handlebars to help put more force on the pedal, the entire bike's so light I just bunny hopped.

I haven't ridden a road bike for about 14 years :D They just look so wobbly to me on their hideously thin tyres.

Give me nice fat tyres and 26" wheels any day :)

Oooh... don't do that. The technique is to bend your elbows so your chest is moved closer to the stem. That shifts your CG forward, over the front wheel; stand up on the pedals as and when needed.

Boardman is Halford's umparket brand (dunno how much they paid him to use his name). Serious roadies get sniffy about them, but they seem to be good value for money.

AFAIK, they're not made by Halfords, they just have exclusive distribution rights, must have cost them a packet.

Frames are manufactured by Merida apparantly.

Serious roadies probably only get sniffy about them because they know they paid twice as much for the same spec :D

The problem I was having is that If I only have one foot in the footstraps then on my old-er hybrid bike I could do that trick. The other thing is that on my[1] old racer the handlebars had a second brake lever for the cross parts - I think the new way of holding (gripping the top of the brake/gear lever) is causing me to be a bit ... all over the road.

I'me also having problems shifting the front gear- I seem to over shift it and derail (when going small to large cog). Lots more practice needed!

[1] techincally its my dads, and techincally it was my uncles before that. Its probably 1960's built.

Those old 70's two-part brake levers are now regarded as a bit dodgy because there's a lot of mechanical slack in the system and they don't brake very well. The modern way of doing it uses completely seperate levers, called cross levers because they're mostly used on cyclocross bikes.

Yeah... you need to get used to riding with hands on the brake hoods as that pretty much is the default position.
